First Cell Phone Call 40 Years Ago

The first cell phone call was made from a Motorola device forty years ago, in April 1973.  It would take another ten years before the first commercially-available cell phones would hit the market.  That was 1983, and for quite some time they were known as car phones because they were installed professionally into your car.  And most professionals still carried a Motorola pager, since their car phone was tethered to their car.  Before long emerged the bag phone, an affordable “transportable” device with a battery like a brick.  Next was the Motorola flip phone, and after that a revolution in “miniaturization” with the launch of the Motorola StarTac in 1996.  We’ve come a long way indeed.
